The widely acclaimed “Beaver Tales” storytelling event will return to the Beaver Area on Oct. 10, 2014, with four all-new storytellers to weave their magic and share a sense of wonder and delight with audiences of all ages.
This year we are proud to feature tellers Joanna Demarest, Antonio Rocha, Jon Spelman and Marsha Wong.
The day will begin with the storytellers visiting children in the Beaver Area School District and State Street Elementary School in Ambridge. This will give children an opportunity to be exposed to the living art form that is professional storytelling, and to interact with the storytellers on a more personal level.
Jon Spelman will be the featured artist at a luncheon for adults, “Lunch, Listen, Laugh,” at the Beaver Area Memorial Library at noon on Friday. Seating is limited to 40 people. Tickets are available at the library.
The culmination of the day’s events will be a grand storytelling celebration, to be held at the gazebo in Beaver at 7 p.m. Be sure to bring comfortable chairs and blankets, and be prepared for an evening of amazing, mesmerizing storytelling. Books and CDs created by the storytellers will be available for purchase, but all events are free to the public.
In case of rain, the event will be held in the gymnasium of College Square School. .
About this year’s storytellers – their initial performance with Beaver Tales:
[ Website ]
Joanna Demarest – has been telling stories to children and adults for more than 20 years. She loves taking well known stories and shaping them so that the listener can “see” the story from the characters perspective. Joanna’s passion for sharing her stories has been fueled by her seventeen moves within the United States and overseas. She has lived on all four corners and in the middle of the U.S. as well as two years in England.

Antonio Rocha – states that “I strive to use my talents as a mime and storyteller to illustrate lessons from different aspects of life. Using the versatile yet simple nature of these art forms, I bring the audience to activate their imagination through rich symbolism and imagery.” Born in Brazil, Antonio has performed his unique fusion of stories and mime from Singapore to Hawaii and at many places in between. His stories soothe the soul, tickle the funny bone, and leave everyone spellbound.

Jon Spelman – a stunning wordsmith and a riveting performer from Baltimore, MD. He is a three time Emmy Award winner by the Washington Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Jon has a wide interest in telling a great variety of stories (humorous, silly, serious, and profound) to a wide variety of audiences in a wide range of places. He performs throughout the U.S. and Europe at colleges, schools, libraries, museums, and arts centers. He was the first American selected to perform at the International Festival of Solo Performers in Tel Aviv, Israel.

Marsha Wong – has traveled around the world in search of new stories to tell. She trekked from place to place; haunted mansions in North America, mystical pyramids in Egypt, temples in Japan, gardens in the Himalayas and houseboats in Kashmir. As a teacher, and mother of three, she used stories daily trying to engage and encourage the children in a vast variety of ways. Many of the stories continually exposed and helped develop good character, values and virtues. Based near Pittsburgh, Marsha performs regularly at festivals, libraries, religious institutions, schools, shelters, senior centers and more. She has performed internationally in Jamaica, West Indies as well.
Beaver Tales always has relied on community support to fund this project. The Beaver Tales Committee would like to thank the Beaver Area Heritage Foundation for making this wonderful event possible. Our gratitude also goes out to Shirley Pow and the Pauline Gibson Memorial fund, Miller Family Foundation, Beaver Borough Festival Committee, the Dutch Ridge and College Square PTA’s, The Women’s Club of Beaver and the Friends of Beaver Tales. Because of these generous donations, we were able once again to provide top-of-the-line billing with excellent professional artists.
