For the past two years, a team of Baker archaeologists and cultural resource specialists has given of their time to analyze, organize and prioritize tens of thousands of archaeological artifacts from Beaver’s Fort McIntosh. The three-person group, senior archaeologist Bryan Cunning, M.A., RPA, senior archaeologist Martin Fuess and archaeology lab supervisor Jonah Jankovik, will speak at our Nov. 17 Speaker Series presentation.
During their initial artifact collection review, several categories of artifact classes were noted, including pre-contact and contact period artifacts covering the Native American, Fort McIntosh and Post Fort-related periods of time. The trio also developed a 500-item spreadsheet of the collection of artifact types, including the bag and box where they are stored, an invaluable tool for the Museum. Baker’s experts will describe the project, what they found in our archives and what they mean about the soldiers who manned the fort during the decade of 1778 to 1788. The best of the manmade pieces, excavated by archaeologists in the mid-1970s, and stored away in boxes ever since, are on exhibit this year in the museum’s display, “Fort McIntosh: Its People and Archaeology.”
The presentation begins at 7 p.m. at Beaver Station. Admission is free and all are welcome.
